MIB Smithy 4.0 Release

February 16th, 2006 by Muonics, Inc.

MIB Smithy 4.0 is a major release with significant improvements in GUI look and feel, new features in the SNMP Tools, and usability improvements. The new feature we’re most excited about is the new compiler log. In this release, MIB Smithy breaks away from the traditional text-only log with a more task-oriented tabular design that’s more concise, has better visual cues to distinguish errors from warnings and between record types, and can be sorted to help you fix problems in the order that’s right for you. We look forward to even more workflow improvements under development for a future release.

Significant Changes (MIB Smithy)

  • Split the compiler log into two tabs, “Tasks” and “Log”. The Log tab continues to display parser/compiler progress information, such as which files are being checked and error/warning counts. The errors and warnings themselves are now displayed in the “Tasks” tab, which is more tabular and allows sorting by error level, location, type of record, etc.
  • Merged features of the MIB Views tools back into MIB Smithy’s SNMP Tools. New features include inline auto-completion, refresh button, clipboard features, CSV export, filtering, and improved responsiveness.
  • Merged MIB Views improvements to the Agent Settings dialog into MIB Smithy.
  • Added more feedback in the status bar about compiler progress.
  • Added column sorting capability to the Imports List property.
  • Performance improvements were made, especially in column sorting in the Enumeration List property for large lists such as IANAifType.
  • Added keyboard bindings Alt-Shift-Up, Down, Home, End for reordering items in the Table Wizard, Sequence property, Index List property, and Reorder Subtree dialog.
  • Added more visual cues to the “Location” bar in Workspace pages indicating that they are clickable to open other workspace pages (blue color and different cursor).
  • Reorder Subtree will now keep selections in view as they are moved up/down the list.
  • Appearance improvements: more consistent look of various lists and tables, appropriate platform-specific selection colors, column expansion, and better Windows application icons.

Miscellaneous Bug Fixes (MIB Smithy)

  • Under some circumstances, WinXP unsets HOMEDRIVE and HOMEPATH, which would prevent MIB Smithy from finding its license key the default location without re-logging in. License key is now stored in the Application Data folder by default.
  • Anchor points for drag-resizing panes could become offset from the mouse’s actual position after a window resize.
  • The invisible frames grouping some parts of the GUI would gain focus when they shouldn’t, particularly for the REVISION and LAST-UPDATED fields and GUI elements with hooks into the Information Panel.
  • A ‘bad command “text”” error would occur upon entering a bad date format in the LAST-UPDATED field, rather than a more useful error.
  • Tab focus order was not correct for the Module and Table Wizards.
  • Windows would attempt to self-repair the installation if any of the default MIB files were removed.
  • Documentation shortcuts were not being set up correctly in the Windows start menu as of an earlier release.
  • An error would occur when clicking on the instructional text in the first tab of the Build Settings dialog.
  • The Table Wizard allowed adding a column with the same name as the table or row object if no prefix was given, which would later result in an error when trying to create two records with the same name.
  • Don’t allow modifying an item in the Imports List to have an OID that is just an identifier–at least two OID elements are required.

Significant Changes (MIB Smithy SDK)

  • Added “-logcommand” SMI Database property, which can be used for custom logging functions similar to “-logchannel”, but a command is invoked rather than printing pre-formatted text to the configured channel.
  • Added “-port” and “-address” options to $session cget as synonyms for “-remoteport” and “-remoteaddress” to sync up with $session config.

Miscellaneous Bug Fixes (MIB Smithy SDK)

  • “smilib get” with a record name and no property did not return an error.
